🧠 What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil, using nutrient-rich water. Instead of soil, plants grow in materials like clay balls while roots absorb nutrients directly from water.
🧩 Components (Based on the Image Kit)
From the Casa De Amor hydroponic kit shown, here are the key parts:
1. 🌿 Growing Channel (Pipe)
- Long rectangular pipe where plants grow
- Holes hold net cups
2. 🪴 Net Cups
- Small holders for plants
- Allow roots to grow downward into nutrient solution
3. 🌱 Growing Medium (Clay Balls / Pellets)
- Supports plant roots
- Replaces soil
4. 💧 Nutrient Solution Bottles
- Different nutrients (N1–N5) supply essential minerals
- Mixed in water for plant feeding
5. ⚡ Water Pump + Tube
- Circulates nutrient water
- Keeps oxygen flowing to roots
6. 🌡️ Air Stone / Aeration Tube
- Adds oxygen to water
- Prevents root rot
7. 🌾 Seeds
- Example: spinach (can also grow lettuce, herbs, strawberries)
⚙️ How It Works (Simple Flow)
- Water is mixed with nutrients
- Pump circulates water through pipes
- Plant roots absorb nutrients directly
- Excess water flows back and recirculates
👉 This system is often called NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)
🏙️ Why Hydroponics for Urban Homes?
✔ No soil → clean and terrace-friendly
✔ Uses 90% less water
✔ Faster plant growth
✔ Can grow on walls or small balconies
✔ Ideal for cities like Mumbai (limited space)
⚠️ Important Tips
- Keep system in indirect sunlight (avoid overheating)
- Maintain pH level (5.5–6.5)
- Clean system regularly
- Use proper nutrient ratios
- Ensure continuous water flow
🧪 Mini Activity
Try growing:
- Spinach 🌿
- Mint 🌱
- Lettuce 🥬
Observe growth compared to soil!
